Progress on the JACALAR Underground Station

Made a lot of good progress this weekend on the underground station, next to the roundhouse. Work crews still have a lot to do, but they've even got some of the artwork up against the walls.

Here's an aerial view, without the roof

The area behind the wall will be where the power lines, etc., go. There is a service door from the main platform to the area, at the top end of the wall in this photo.

This shot shows the color the trackbed will be painted, to be like cement.

And here's a ground level view, without the roof. Note: I've removed the plexiglass fascia while working
    [IMG]

The pillars will actually be attached to the roof.

With the roof on, we see the single light fixture that the crew got temporarily wired up. Eventually, there will be 4 to 6 of these along the roof. We can also see some detail on the artwork going in

And, finally, this shows the roof, where I'll be putting a road for entry to the yard. The yard will also have a chain link fence around this side of it. The actual station is where most of the photos are taken from, and will only exist in the realms of thought.

At first, I was going to try to do a backlit poster, but couldn't get it to look quite right. So, instead went with printing on high quality photo paper. With the LED lighting, there's plenty of light visible. I may also still put up a couple of ads. Still have to add some walls at the ends of the platform.

I'm planning to add some station signage, and some people, of course. They'll come later. Maybe get the Woodland Scenic Accents "Shoe Shine" and "News Stand" kits - they're good station-platform scenes.

Thanks Jerry. Once I realized I was going to have this long wall, I realized that train stations always had posters and ads up along those walls. Since I've declared the JACALAR to be a sort of "living history museum" of restored and excursion trains, living in modern times (that way, I can have any car or loco on the rails, and always be "correct"), I figured the station would be part of the museum too. So, instead of ads, vintage rail posters.

I Googled "railroad posters", and selected the "Image results for...". The five posters I've chosen for the wall are:

There were many others, but we liked these the best. I figured the "ebay" disclaimer on the California poster would be so small, when reduced to N scale, it wouldn't matter.

Dang, everybody is getting ahead of me.

Well, that's all right. I'l get caught up when spring and it's warmer breezes gets here.

The layout is looking mighty fine and I like the added touches. Those signs look splendid.

Well, I'm not getting TOO far ahead. Will have taken me 2 to 3 weeks to do these 100 sq inches of underground space, and then I have the same 100 sq inches "above ground" to work on! I calculate I have about 10,000 sq inches of scenery to do, so that's a grand total of 1%! At this rate, it should take about 6 years to do the layout (which is actually close to what I was telling people when I started).

    Rick,

Your work looks good and I can only hope mine will turn out as well.

I've been concentrating on purchasing equipment. Kind of a...if you snooze you loose. In other words if I don't get it while it's sitting on the shelf the opportunity may pass itself by.

Now how come this thread doesn't have a starred rating? Aw, I just found the rating box in the advanced mode.

I know what you mean. There's just so much good stuff out there, and I want it ALL right now. But, I have to keep reminding myself that I need to keep things under control.

That be true. Well, I may have to pass on the Challengers, Big Boy's, AC12's and the likes. I hopes that when I'm able and can eventually see them spotted in the roundhouse.

Till then it's do what I can, when I can, with what I have.:pwink:

I hope you don't mind, I lifted the signs off of your posting in hopes of using them on my layout.

    Been a slow 2 weeks

Life and work have a way of interrupting the fun of working on the layout, but I've basically "completed" the station and platform. Still want to add WS Shoe Shine and News Stand sets to the platforms, which will be in a week or so. Maybe set some other folks in there, too.

I've got to work a bit more on the photos, but these will give a good idea.
