These are the only 4 shots I have in my collection of CNW Diesels. This is at the River Forest Illinois station. Eastbound TOFC train from proviso passing a westbound Stack train heading to Proviso and I assume Omaha and points west some time in the early 90s. I spent a lot of years at this station watching the trains this and the former Soo WC line that crosses it about a quarter mile east and 25ish' above. wish I had brought the camera with more often.
I always liked the electric nose bell, too. I don't know of any class one that used them as much as the CNW did. The sad part is that the UP has covered over the bells on the SD-40-2 on locos that were repainted from CNW to UP colors after Dec, 1997, with the frame 'air bells'. The UP also redid some of the earlier units and put the frame bells on them. My favorite unit for awhile was the UP2954, which still had an operating strobe on the roof, the nose bell, and the "We Will Deliever" logo on the hood. The WWD is translated as 'we messed up the CNW and cant run trains on time, but will still want the SP.'
The Illinois Terminal used the same bell on it's 6 SD39's, but theirs were mounted on the front of the battery boxes in front of the engineer. 4 of these ended up on Guilford, anyone know if they still have them?
