I have been digging around in my archives (that shoebox in my closet ) and came up with this: I know they made it into NS, but I have not seen one in years. Harold
Here's another shot of the same unit: This shot was taken from the the street below a trestle that carried the Southern Railroad down to the junction with (original) NS and SCL. Harold
Here's another unit from the same class, running like I enjoyed them the most: long hood forward! The afternoon sun is setting on the cool, brisk fall day as # 3504 leads other units to the fuel racks at Glenwood Yard in Raleigh. Harold
Interesting thought. Pondering all those fan publication pictures, etc, I realize they certainly seem to have quietly faded away. Boxcab E50
They were 3000 hp GE units that had a 12 cylinder prime mover instead of the standard 16 cylinder unit. (I think they were supposed to provide better fuel economy). I know Southern bought 22 units and MP bought some. BN actually ordered some cabless "B" units. I guess that made them B30-7AB's Harold
Now didn't several end up on the Georgia Southern where they continue to roll today? or am I thinking of different hi-nose B's.
Pat, I don't know what happened to these units. I think only U23 or B23 units went to Georgia Southern, but I am not sure. Harold
Two mistakes on my part...the railroad is Georgia Central (not southern) and their locomotives are U23B's.
Not a problem.,... I think NS has divested themselves of not only the B30-7's, but all U23's and most B23's. NS retired all B30-7A's in late 2001, right at their 20 year anniversary. Harold
