Hi Dick, Thats a very nice track plan my friend, I like plenty of industries/mining on a double track main line. The trestle bridge coming over the mountains should make an excellent view/photo point later on. cheers Paul
Hey Telleegraffur.... It is VERY importunt thet yew do it rite! Yore fust photo has to show yew holdin' a saw wit da board laid acrost the arms of the dinning room chair, makin' yure fust cut! Today has been a very frustrating day. I took the day and went to 3 Home Depot's in Sacramento. Then drove to Vacaville to the Home Depot and Lowe's trying to find Blue or Pink Styrafoam. Would you believe that none of those stores had even heard of it. The whole day was shot to I finally ended up with 1" white with foil backing. That was the best I could find.
Dick, Speaking from experience, in my area we have several smaller 'Lumber' stores that usually have the blue foam when the 'chain' stores are sold out. Keep in mind that if there is a lot of construction in your area that the stuff is going to be harder to find, as the chain stores offer better prices to the contractors. You may also find the smaller stores willing to match the chain store prices if you are willing to buy several sheets. Anyway that was my experience in Salty Town.... your results may vary! 2slim
Dick, Try contacting some insulation supply companies in your area. I am not sure if you are in Northern or Southern CA but as you get further South, the home centers stop stocking foam board (which for them is insulation). An insulation supply house will have it all the time, usually at a price pretty close to the larger home centers that stock it. I am in the Dallas, TX area and had to go to a local dealer to get mine because Home Depot and Lowes did not stock it. BTW, you may find it in other colors than pink or blue. Mine was green which is an added benefit as far as scenery is concerned. Good Luck!!
My benchwork is finished. All I have to do now is find something I can use for toping. That 1" white foam I bought is not going to work. I spend about 3 hours on the phone today calling every building supply place within 50 miles and nobody has any Dow Corning foam and most said they have not heard of it. I must live in a hollow as everybody else on Train board has no trouble finding it. as much as I didn't want to maybe I will just have to use 1/2 " plywood and put the 1 inch white foam on top. I have enough bracing in the layout bench to support the plywood but not the 1" foam as it sages in the 14 inch spaces. Well, back to the drawing board.
I live close to Los Angeles, and I haven't been able to find the foam either, so I'm just using bare plywood. Jesper
I went to the Owens Corning (Not Dow! - maybe thats part of the problem?) web site (http://www.owenscorning.com). They make the Foamular brand (the pink stuff). They have a "dealer locator" page, I used zip code 90009 as a LA location, and got the following: THE HOME DEPOT 310-644-9600 14603 OCEANGATE HAWTHORNE, CA 90250 THE HOME DEPOT 323-461-3303 5600 SUNSET BLVD HOLLYWOOD, CA 90028 Not sure who makes the blue stuff. Or any other color. Hope this helps.
I checked that website, and I can see that Home depot in Thousand Oaks is supposed to have the foam insulation board (I assume that's what I should be looking for), but when I asked them long time ago, all they had was the fiberglass insulation or the white beaded styroform sheets as Dick mentioned. So the Owens foam board is the one to use ?, if so, then I will go and ask the specifically for that one and maybe even bring a print out from their web page. Thanks Jesper
I checked the website also and printed up a long list of dealers within a 50 mile radius that they say handle their foam. I had contacted most of them the other day and phoned the rest today. They are all Home Depots and not a one carries Owens-corning foam or any other type of blue or pink foam. Only that white junk so I am going to plywood.
I did ask one if they could order. They said if it is on their order form that they could then order in large quantities. All I wanted was 2 4x8 sheets.
Dick, I did a scale drawing of how the south end of your yard fits - I find that ladders always take way more space then you expect. I don't know what points you are using but his is drawn with Peco Medium Points (about a number 6 - ok not really but that's a whole differnt story) The inside turn is a bit over 14 1/2 inch radius and the track spacing is one inch (a bit tight but I am used to HO) If ya want - let me know the spacing and points you are using and I will adjust the drawing. Lines are 12 inches apart. PS - I cleaned up this thread a bit while I was at it. [ 07. August 2002, 10:48: Message edited by: yankinoz ]
Rob. Thanks for the drawing. My plan was to have a double track main line for continous running. I am going to buy #4 turnouts for the yard. Hope this won't be to sharp. I am in the process of laying one of the double track lines now so I can get started running my trains at least in a circle. Then when I get the new turnouts, lay the track for the other main line.
Here it is with number 4's - this makes the yard tracks much longer - I also shifted the ladder to the left a bit. The inside radius in 15". Note the placement of the crossover (do this on both sides) as it allows a train to exit the yard and get to the right hand track for right hand running. Reverse the crossover if you model the CNW or UK or Aussy or other left hand running railroad.
Thanks Rob. I have printed you plan. I have already started laying track for one of the main lines but am going to change the crossover to conform to your plan. The crossover turnouts are #6 but figured to use #4 to lenghten to yard tracks Thanks again.
