Take a Model Train to Work Day 2003

The World’s Greatest Hobby Designates November 14 The Third Annual “Take a Model Train to Work Day”

Waukesha, WI— For the third year in a row, the World’s Greatest HobbySM campaign invites hobbyists to share their love of model railroading with colleagues and friends on Take a Model Train to Work Day—Friday, November 14, 2003. This occasion offers an opportunity for model train enthusiasts to share their love of model trains with their friends and co-workers.

The previous two events were national successes. In addition to hundreds of enthusiasts bringing their layouts to work, the General Motors Design Center in Warren, MI filled its second-floor lobby with dozens of model trains, including many S and O gauge toy trains. More than 20 designers, engineers, sculptors and other GM employees participated in the event as part of GM’s Employee Enthusiasm Program.

“Take a Model Train to Work Day has been a huge success, and we are looking forward to new model train enthusiasts showing their hobby this year,” said Model Railroader Editor Terry Thompson. “The spirit of the World’s Greatest HobbySM emphasizes a feeling of community, volunteerism and friendship that materializes on Take a Model Train to Work Day. The best way to expand and generate more interest in the hobby is to tap into the enthusiasm of the 500,000 hobbyists already devoting their time and energy to model railroads.”

The World’s Greatest HobbySM enjoys support from every strata of the model railroading world—from manufacturers to individual hobbyists. Over 1,000 model railroaders have volunteered as Ambassadors to share their love of the hobby in presentations to community and civic organizations. They are aided in their presentations by a video starring actor and enthusiast Michael Gross. Additionally, 706 model train clubs and 722 hobby shops participate in the outreach program.

Participants are encouraged to send photos and success stories from Take a Model Train to Work Day to World’s Greatest Hobby, P.O. Box 1612, Waukesha, WI 53187-1612. A selection of submissions will be published at www.greatesthobby.com and in affiliated magazines.

Here what I built last night and brought into the office this morning:

Here are 3 pictures (sorry, they are a bit large)

Printed on a piece of paper next to my display is the article about the "Take a Model Train to Work Day" along with this description of the diorama:

On display is a six axle high-hood EMD SD9 locomotive in Duluth Missabe & Iron Range paint. EMD produced over 70 of these versatile 1,750 horse power SD9s for the DM&IR between 1955 and 1959.

Following the locomotive are two 24’ DM&IR ore cars. These cars are used in northern Minnesota to transport iron ore from mines on the iron range to processing plants. The processing plants transform the crude ore into 66% iron rich taconite pellets which are then shipped down to the ore docks on Lake Superior and hauled away by boat.

The Duluth Missabe & Iron Range railroad is part of a greater conglomeration of carriers and transport companies in Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin called The Great Lakes Transportation LLC.

    Materials used:
-discarded 2" pink extruded foam board
    -green clump foilage
    -medium mixed grey ballast
-fine dark sand that I gathered from the side of my garage for the dry creek bed
    -spare cork roadbed
-spare Atlas code 83 flex track
    -earth tone paint
-Floquil rail brown spray paint to weather the rails
    -Elmers white glue
    -isopropyl alcohol
    -water

Well, my office is in my home. So there are trains here and there..... :D

As Alan asked, I am also wondering. Any reactions from co-workers?

Wonder if this "holiday" ever took off :tb-shocked:

I didn't see it's own greeting card section last year, so guessing not.

    :parghh: Argh!

Well, MR publicise it every year as part of their World's Greatest Hobby campaign.
But I'm not sure how big Kalmbach's "World" is. I suspect it may not include all countries :)
