Today while passing through Tacoma on 509, I happened to notice, due to its out of place paint scheme, a New York, Susquehanna & Western locomotive in the BNSF Tacoma Yard. It appeared to be an SD45, or similar type. Unfortunately, due to being on the highway, there was no practical way to get a picture of the locomotive, or get its number.

Anyone have any ideas on which one it is, and what it's doing way on the other side of the country? As far as I know it's only showed up since last week, the last time I passed through the area.

    Kind Regards,
    Kyle

Maybe it is one of many units BNSF has under lease right now?

Could be, it just seemed odd because it was sitting all along in a remote part of the yard. My first thought was it could be something Tacoma Rail bought, and it's just waiting to be moved to their yard.

The next time I go through the area, I may have to see if I can find a way to get a picture.

I read somewhere else that two Susquehanna locomotives were going to (it said CEECO, but I am not sure they are still in business) for overhaul and I think it said update of powerplant to more economical and green friendly power.

CEECo closed back in 2009. There is another company, if I recall their name is "Global Locomotive". But not in Tacoma, down slighly south of Olympia and some of the former CEECo employees are there.

Could it be one of Norfolk Southern Heritage units? They have been far from home rails in the past.

Yes. Good idea. That could well be it. I know there have been a few which have come into this region on BNSF.

The ex ceeco shop is now a progress/emd facility. BNSF leased an MRL SD45 a number of years ago that was former suzyQ in yellow and blue. But that lease ended some time ago.

If it was an NS engine, the only paint schemes vaguely resembling an NYS&W "Yellowjacket" might be either their Reading, or Virginian units.

While I didn't see the number, I definitely could read "Susquehanna" painted on the side. No doubt about it.

I'll probably try to head down that way on Wednesday or Thursday to see if it's still there and try to get a photo.

    Please do.

I have been trying to find information on the 'Net, of any NYS&W units which might be floating around, but so far nothing shows. I thought all their surplused SD45 engines were either scrapped, or otherwise sold, some time ago.

Go figure that it was nowhere to be seen when I visited Tacoma today. Who knows, I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for it if it shows up in Seattle or back in Tacoma.

About the most interesting thing I did manage to see lingering in Tacoma today was an old Soo Line hopper hiding in a lineup at the grain terminal.

I had a feeling it would be gone. Another mystery.... That Soo hopper would be worth grabbing a picture!

You saw one of NYSW's ex SP SD40T-2 units going to Progress for an ECO rebuild, like the CP SD22s have been getting. You saw 3012 or 3016

    Ah. An answer! Thanks!

Is it still owned by NYS&W?

Canadian pacific has been getting SD32ECOs (or SD30s as CP calls them)
So are these going to be v12 3150 HP SD32s? or are they going to be v8 2150 SD22s?

I hadn't heard anyone was rebuilding any Tunnel motors. no word from all the most typical sources. I'm intrigued as I've wondered for some time whether the upside down radiator would present issues for the new radiator config that the ECO requires.

    Yes 3012 & 3016 are still nysw owned. They also have 2 other tunnel motors (one not active, 2 SD45s (not active, 6 ex-Oakway SD60s, and 1 ex-Southern SD40-2, an ex N&W SD40 and a former CSX (Atlanta & West Point) GP40

Thanks for the info. I'll have to keep an eye out while passing Progress to see if I can get the number. I've been meaning to pull off on the road there to get a picture of a locomotive being parted out there, anyways.

Okay, I was quite surprised today to not only find NYSW 3012, which must be the one I saw earlier, now in the yard at Progress, but also NYSW 3016 hooked into a line of cars at the Belt Line yard, apparently having just arrived. I've attached photos of both.

That yellow on 3012 looks a bit washed out.
