Before the Southern Pacific took over control of the Galveston Harrisburg & San Antonio, the GH & SA were already using an early variation of the Sunset Route logo. Here is an example on a meal token used to pay construction workers during a period where United States currency was in short supply due to a panic in the 1870s. Local merchants accepted them as payment for goods as well as for food because of the scarce money situation. The company exchanged them with bank notes on demand if a sufficient quantity was presented.
