Well I was out today doing some railfanning waiting for a KCS Locomotive on NS 375. Well I didnt end up seeing the KCS AC4400CW But I did get an interesting shot!

After confronting the kid and waiting for NS 112 to come back we went to the Local PD and let them know. This isnt the first time ive seen this kid try this stunt.

The next time could be his last time, if he tries it again.

    Alex-

Glad you turned him in. However, take care. Anyone that ignorant, might not like your interference. Might just get his buddies together, and come your way....

    Alex,
Might be easier/safer to just have the phone number to the NS police in your cell, and phone them in after the trains rolls past/the offender is out of your sight.

Yea I know what you mean. My dad actually commented about that saying "You know if they have a knife or any weapon on them they could hurt you for your camera right". I mean I didnt say it in a mean way or anything I just said straight up that I got a picture of them and the cops will be notified

    Alex,

While I cetainly do commend you for stepping forward and looking out for this doofus's future, I will second the notion of not directly confronting these kind of folks, even in a mild, non-threatening way. My job is quasi-law enforcement, so I am forced on occasion to confront people about their less intelligent actions. I can tell you that these situations have sometimes gone south fast, usually just verbally but physically a time or two. And I'm the one with a pistol and stick on my belt!

Please just keep in mind that there's a lot of whackjobs out there and CYA.

Again, mucho kudos for getting involved. At some point he might realize that you were really trying to let him see 15!

You absolutely did the right thing. One thing to remember is that you must think of your safety first then that of the dope doing the dangerous stunt! I learned this when I was a life guard many years ago. I agree with the other folks...wait till they go by then call the police. Additionally it may not be a bad thing to contact the railroad and let them know about these kids...

I'm going to offer a counter point.

This is a dumb thing to do, that is true, but I have to say that I know of many people, especially in more country settings that Hop the trains for fun. It's a dangerous thing to do, but it used to be very typical. I remember on a DVD I have about the Northwestern Pacific, one of the gray hairs on the excursion talked about hoping the frieghts to go swimming somewhere.

Again, I'm not saying it's smart or that it should be encouraged, but there's a certain amount of nostalgia associated. I wouldn't recommend doing it, I have never done it, but I can't say as I'd be worked up about it either.

The dumb thing is if the kid Darwins himself, the parents will sue the railroad...

I wish it weren't possible for lawsuits like that.

The one thing I like about railfanning in Lebanon Junction is that the police station(and fire department) is right across the tracks from where I am. If I was in trouble, they'd hopefully be there rather quickly. I might just ride over there tommorow,as a matter of fact.

I wouldn't recommend hopping trains to any kid but if the kid knows what he's doing I'd certainly not turn him in cause I rode many trains in my younger day. There's already too many people trying to run our lives instead of worrying about their own.....dave

Well id rather report him and him know he did wrong then hearing about a 13 or 14 year old boy getting killed in New Albany cause someone didnt show him that it was wrong.

What that kid was doing is illegal. It's not about someone running our lives. There are boundaries to everything we do.

Anyone who does this is on property owned by someone else, faces consequences from their actions. It's about the companys right to protect itself, their customers, and the public around their operation from irresponsible actions.

Alex, you did the right thing.

Agree with Boxie. I did a TON of very DUMB stuff when I was young, and managed to never get hurt or hurt anyone else. I'm very lucky, I now realize.

Yeah, who cares if it's possible tampering, trespassing, against the law, and could kill him.

Alex- regardless of what some folks said on here, you did the right thing. I also agree it's best not to say anything to these punks, but take the camera straight to the local police department. Also, not a bad idea to get a cell phone- Cingular's Pay As You Go plan is cheap.

One good slack run-in, and he loses his footing and...............well, you get the idea.
