I'm thinking about taking a trip to Steamtown PA. Never been before. Has anyone ever went? Was it worth it? Are there any hobby shops around?
I was there a little over a month ago. It was my third time there. I was dissapointed on the last trip as all steam was sidelined. The steam locomotive that was scheduled to run the Mosscow train had recently suffered a supperheater tube crack was under steam but was still being repaired. The rest of the normal steam fleet is either being overhauled or is getting repair work done. Is Steamtown worth visiting yes, I think so. It is a chance to see up close different locomotives from the steam generation, aka UP bigboy, Reading T-1, and others. There is one or two hobby shops within a few blocks of Steamtown heading for the former passenger station on the same street. The hobby shops are open during the week and I believe only til 4 or 5 on Saturday.
I was there three years ago with my wife, who really didn't want to go, but enjoyed it as much as I did. It is well worth the trip.
