This could be a scene out of the early 1900s. Instead it was taken only two days ago on May 15, 2004. Number 90 was working the tourist train, running backwards on the outbound run. It is backing past the water tank as it is doing its run-around.
Great pic Peirce! That was the first Strasburg engine that I ever had the pleasure of running behind back in the late 70's. My grandfather introduced me to her and she has been my favorite locomotive since. Now, all these years later I am taking my own kids on rides behind her! Goes to show you, the generations of passengers change but great steam stays the same! Russ
Well.........They did about $185,000 in repairs the Rio Grande 346 for the COlorado Railroad Museum. Updated the boiler to current standards, and they also rebuilt the entire? running gear/frame under the 346. CRRM doesn't have the ability to do the boiler work required by law, and so had to send it out for rebuild. As for the #90, isn't this locomotive an ex Great western Sugar Co locomotive? I'm thinking it is, but not completely sure!
Russ, knowing how much you love this locomotive, I gotta post my favorite shot of her, again. Don't know how many times I have lost it in RI crashes. Looking forward to this summer's steam.
No comment necessary. The entire train crew was great in making sure the kids of all ages were having fun.
Strasburg's #90 is a true gem, something to behold to be in such good shape in the year 2004: Taken May 24, 2004.
