Okay, I can only find some contemporary, stored KCS steam engines. They show white lettering. Is this correct for units in the 40s and 50s? And where can I find decals for these engines? Thank, Kevin

    Kevin,
Looks like white. You might be able to find a decal sheet for the correct font and put together your own.

Yeah, I was trying to avoid piecing it together. Might use some white decal paper to do a black overlay, leaving the white showing through. Thanks again for your help!

Is there a KCS Historical group or website with some info, maybe?

Just stumbled onto this thread. I didn't know if you ever got an answer but here's a link to a photo of a KCS steam engine on display. The lettering and numbers are white but if that was true in service or only after retirement, I don't know. Anyway, here's the link:

Okay, does anyone know of someone producing white lettered decals for this line that could be used on the tender?

    Deacon,
Not specifically for that line, but pretty close. K4 Decals have three Roman type faces that are close, wide, extended, and railroad.
Wide is on the first page, second from bottom row.

Just as a guess, Santa Fe had large numbers on their tenders (example #3751). Would they be close enough? Or, depending on what scale you're modeling, a larger size set of numbers might do. I remember reading either an RMC or MR article where the writers were reworking an N-scale C&O "Kanawha" or 2-8-4 steamer. Decals were apparently not easy to find for N scale in those days, so the writers took an HO scale "Chesapeake & Ohio" sandbox decal and used it on their N-scale tender!

The numbers are not the problem. I could not find white Kansas City Southern as written on the tender.

Oops, my mistake. Again, FWIW, B&O had similar 9-inch or 6-inch letters for their tenders, but it would be tough to cobble up a "K", IMO. Here's a link to the B&O Historical Society page which has samples of various letters. Hope this helps!
