I ought to be ashamed of myself for not thinking of this sooner... Russell Straw, one of the builders (if not thee builder) of the Sugar Land, Tx. N-trak module has a couple of interesting articles on his web-site that might be of use to some of you wanting to build your own chassis. He has fabricated chassis for old Atlas/Rivarossi steam (his 4-4-2 Atlantic is a real charmer) as well as modified Kato's Mike chassis to represent a 2-10-2... Russ' Place

His method of fabricating frames has a great deal of application and I think that it could prove to be of great use to many who either would want to rebuild old Atlas/RR steamers or for anyone who would like to custom build a steamer not currently available, providing you have access to the necessary parts.
