I picked up a MR book on Steam Loco projects and ideas today. I got home to read it and while I found it informative and detailed, it is only good for coal steam. This is a problem since I live in The Great Pacific Northwest and I model SP and SP&S-both didn't do a lot with coal as far as I know. So for detailing, what are the major differences between coal and oil locos? I think SP&S's Challengers had bigger fire boxes and obviously oil tenders, and just like the SP&S 700, they too were just a oil fired version of a parent company's, but that's about all I know. I'm going to assume that they don't have ash pans, ash pan links ect? I'm just wondering since I think I could make or bash a SP&S 2-4-0 and so on for less then $1,200, but I still need to know things like what to change and who makes the parts. Plus this thread might come in handy if anyone ever finds themselves in this situation. Josh
