This Cotton Belt long caboose will be on the road this week from Old Saybrook, CT. Mr. Gary Powell has bought his third caboose and is having it shipped to Cedar Park, TEXAS and the Austin Steam Train Association Shops where it will be restored.
nice looking caboose. will look great when it's done. everyone along the route needs to get their camera ready
I'll post the basic routing when it is known. The first truck with the long caboose body on it should be leaving today. The second flatbed is carrying the trucks and cupola. Ed in Kentucky
That's what I call a "drover" caboose...a caboose that allowed the cowboys to ride along behind the cattle cars to attend to watering and feeding the cattle every eight hours. How the heck did it get to Old Saybrook, CT?
Flash: There is a 1964-photo of SSW 2305 in New York State on the rrpictures archives website. Presumably the car was sold by SSW to interests at the Railroad Museum of New England back then. So the car has been in New England since that date. Gary Powell has been negotiating with the Railroad Museum of New England for some time to purchase the car and move it to TEXAS. Ed in Kentucky
Restoration is underway at the Austin Steam Train Association facility at Cedar Park, TEXAS. I'll check and see when it might be operational, but the last I heard was "next year".
I confirmed with Gary Powell this morning. It looks like next year before the #2305 will be operational at ASTA. The #2305 was the last of six Cotton Belt long cabooses and it was built in 1914.
