Me too me too! There's probably quite a few cabooses hidden around all over the place that not many people know about, what a nice find!

Actually earlier this year I bought 2 Athearn N scale versions of a SP caboose like this, and their coming out with a third version this fall I think. The Athearn models really look fantastic.

"I like my trains like I like my women, gotta have a nice caboose on the end!"

As long as it doesn't have to be an Espee caboose:Cabooses - Leading the industry in railroad equipment sales...

Forget the office. I want one for my train room. Wouldn't that be a cool train room with an N scale layout filling the crummy? You could have one of the bays be the dispatchers console.

    HHHHHHHHHMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm???????????????

I don't believe it's currently an office, although it may have been placed where it is with that intention.

This caboose sits in the back lot of a theatrical lighting company that I have frequently rented from. I've never asked about the caboose, but I could the next time I'm there (might not be for a while). It is always a pleasure to see it whenever I'm there.

Not many. The biggest one is that there are a two California Zephyr cars marooned on one of the last remnants of WP trackage in Potrero Hill. The location is between 16th and 17th by DeHaro. They are behind Sally's Restaraunt. They used to be much more visible from the street but now you pretty much have to know that they are there. BTW if you look at that area in Google Maps the WP right of way stands out like a sore thumb even though the track is pretty much all gone.

As far as other gems... There are a few abandoned crossbucks in Soma, guarding track that isn't there anymore, that I've been meaning to take pictures of. One is under the freeway at south the end of 9th St. Another is between some buildings on Bryant near Division. The latter is on or very close to the route of the original SP mainline into downtown San Francisco.

oh, and the other thing not to forget is that the San Francisco Bay Railroad still OPERATES two Alcos and a Baldwin at Pier 96. I've never actually caught them moving, but they are in different spots when I visit down there.

yup ive seen all the ones you mentioned. check out my facebook album full of it.
Incompatible Browser | Facebook. that one you mention on division street is the coolest one ive seen haha.

the most hidden one ive found is the lonely signal behind ARCH drafting supplies (99 missouri) in their parking lot. also the super rusted crossbuck in front the SF Guardian newspaper building that says SANTARE on it (135 mississippi)

i took some photos of those California Zephyrs too a little while back.

and i visited the SF belt railroad yesterday too haha (is it SF bay or SF belt??). never seen them move either. how i would LOVE to see them move through the city! that would be quite a sight! tons of old track in that area. i guess these guys are mostly hauling garbage?

I'll be in San Francisco next week, I'll have to find it.

There's a ICG caboose in a field about 50 miles south of Houston, Tx. I'd love to find out the story on that one....

SP caboose in potrero hill / pioneer square

Hey there-- so I've been deeply curious about the train caboose and its history, and have friends that live next door. I've done several searches on Google but am at a loss for where to start in terms of figuring out where the train car came from and how it got there-- do you lovely humans have any advice on where I should start in terms of research? :) The residents seems to have no idea.... :)

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

Probably the biggest caboose fan in North America is a fellow named Roger Kirkpatrick. He'd likely be a good starting point. Try starting with a look at the web site: www.arches.org

Looking at the prices on that link to caboose sales, I can't help but remember an article in Model Railroaders about buying a caboose for use as an office, or, in the case of the article, as a cabin in mountainous I think Co or Az.

It listed the price of an ATSF caboose as $2500 a piece.

Of course, back then the railroads were shedding them fast and there were lots to buy from.
