My city will need its own sports team and stadium. Where might I find or how can I make any type of sports stadium?
What era are you modeling? If it's steam era, your stadium would be low-lying and lack lights. If you're modeling the 60s-70s. your stadium would be the concrete cookie-cutter design that many stadiums had, with a large parking lot, likely farther away from your downtown. If it's modern, you might want to look into a large structure with a retractable roof, closer to your downtown.
Here you go sports stadiums in any sport your heart may desire http://www.switsport.com/footballstadiumreplicas.htm
You should ask the guys at Miniatur Wunderland in Germany how they built theirs: http://www.miniatur-wunderland.de/fileadmin/media/besucher-visitor/hamburg/anja-woo woo woo-hamburg-aol-aren.jpg ...and remember to include lots of figures: On a more down-to-earth scale, Traincat offers a baseball diamond and bleachers. I've been planning a "modern minor league stadium". Some of the newer minor-league stadiums are REALLY nice, so I was thinking of something like a scaled down version of the Ballpark in Arlington. Obviously the field size is the same or close, but just a little less crowd capacity. I was thinking of using the Kibri 1871 Factory Building as a starting point for the outside fascade. And in fact, I found the two towers and back building shown below at a train show this past weekend. ($4 total!) Figuring I'll need additional towers to make it work, that was a good find because the kit is not cheap.
scratch built from foam and cardstock, covered with printed paper. It's HO, but N version woudn't be much different
For a very small stadium (Little League, junior high school....) try TrainCat. He makes an entched metal kit for bleachers.
Minor League stadiums typically only have one or two levels, and no outfield seating (or a grassy picnic area beyond the outfield wall with no seats). If I were ever to model a stadium, I HAVE to put a little speaker inside that would playback crowd noises. Can't wait to see your stadium! You should give the naming rights to a model railroad manufacturer!
River_Eagle that really came out nice. Are the covered Bleechers styrene or what did you use if I may ask? Thanks for your time in responding
If I was to make a stadium it would have to be for Quidditch. I think I'd have to make each of my players, (and fans), and suspending them would be really tough. Oh well, not enough room anyway.
The outer walls are foam covered with brick paper, but the interior structures are all cardstock with cardboard framework, and this was built by our 20 year old club member, I just took the pics.
One other suggestion for including a stadium without actually modeling it would be to add it as part of the backdrop, either by painting or digital photography. I have the Mike Danneman book on backdrops and this is the method he uses for adding Mile High Stadium in Denver to his D&RGW layout. It may sound chnsy, but if you have seen his layout you know how well it works (and if you were familiar with the old Mile High Stadium, you recognize it instantly). BTW those modeled stadiums in the earlier posts are quite impressive. Jamie
Good idea Jamie, wouldn't take up the space for your layout, cheaper, and just as effective.
I've seen the Martinsville Speedway which sits near an NS line done in model railroading(I think it was N scale). I've only seen one or two photos, but they had a decent number of grandstands around the race track(the real track is surrounded by tall grandstands).
Wrigley Field or Fenway Park are small in area. I remember some of the older parks had bigger fields but small stands. I don't remember the dimensions, but wasn't Ebbets Field fairly small?
I think these are more like Z scale or maybe even smaller, but as a distant background item, they might work. http://www.danburymint.com/sports/cat/Stadium-Replicas_215.aspx
