I notice that the pricing between similar size locos is vastly different between these two brands. For instance: the Spectrum 2-8-0 Consolidation runs around 70 bucks street price; whereas the P2K 0-8-0 switcher runs about 140 bucks street price. Is there that big a difference in quality or detailing to justify that much difference? I'd like to hear some thoughts on this subject. Thanks for your input!

Having owned both, I would have to say that they are very similar in quality. Lifelike has better quality control, but bachman Spectrim locos run just as well as long as you dont get the "dog". Both are DCC ready and very easy to convert, just plug in the decoder. ( you do have to change the bulbs in the 0-8-0 though). When the 2-8-0 came out it was a bit more expensive. I think I paid 120.00 for mine. So I expect the 0-8-0 price may come down in the future. As far as detail goes Lifelike is a bit better. The detials adhear more to a specific prototype, where the Spectrim is well detialed but to a more generic leval.
Both are very good locos IMO....Mike

    Very good thoughts.

I agree, I believe that the P2K stuff isn't as highly produced like the Spectrum line. I'm sure they're banging out more 2-8-0s than we can shake a stick at.

Having both lines, I think P2K is a little better detailed, but both are fantastic to me.

I'm really really curious about the new Broadway Limited line. Should be interesting.

Thanks for youe opinions. I, too, am looking forward to the locos from Broadway Limited. Let's hope their quality is up to the ads!

I was an owner of a Spectrum GP30, and had the chance to test-run a P2K GP30. I was satisfied with the details of both, but the Spectrum sounded like a coffee grinder when it ran. In comparison, the P2K ran smooth. Perhaps I got hold of a dog Spectrum, but I sold the Spectrum a few years ago. The only Spectrums I now have are two 44-tonners, which are sweet.

I've seen the Spectrum Russian in operation, and it looks and runs really nice. I've had the chance to see P2K steamers in action, but I'm not a steam guy, so I really can't comment on them too much except to say they are getting better-detailed all the time.

The Pk2 warranty is a little bit better for $5.00 for returns after 90 days.
Believe the Bachmann is $15.00 after one year.
