refreshing this thread for easy reference-
No need to change couplers to stop the lead maxi-IV , 3 piece unit from derailing on the lead truck behind the locomotive. Take a 40 or 45 or 48 or 53' container; open it up and put in heavy, large size screw-nuts to weight that first unit, substantially. You will not have an issue (as long as your track work is not flawed. I ran 24 of the maxi-IV behind 3 Scaletrains GEVO's with no issues at all! I rain the train at 65 scale MPH for about 15 minutes and it was perfect. Not a big fan of KATO couplers but they work and never uncouple when you don't want them to. I have all kinds of issues with Athearn container cars that are equipped with Mchenry couplers. The cars are too light, even with 2 containers in each well. Any slack or the slightest inconsistent throttle speed and cars will randomly uncouple. Not a big fan of Mchenry couplers or knock off MT looking couplers-they don't stay coupled either for the container trains. I don't have the issues with tank cars or other rolling stock.

Hopefully I've helped somebody with a solution for the KATO MAXI-IV derailing issue.
