Can anybody tell me when SP and UP began sharing trackage and/or power prior to the 1996 merger? I know some SP trains ran over UP track a year earlier, but was there any kind of working agreement in place for any length of time prior to the merger? Thanks
You can probably get a definitive answer on the Yahoo Groups Espee list. Those guys argue about the size of windows in passenger cars. Too much detail for me. But, there was track sharing concurrent with the merger mania, as I remember. That was to keep the competition even. Sometimes it involved some unlikely road names. I would say that was early 1990s. Also, but, I don't think that involved the UP/SP. Better ask the Espee list. They did operate together in the 1880s before Teddy Roosevelt and the trustbusters. Flash Blackman San Antonio, Texas
