Anyone out there got access to roster shots of SP's P-6 class (Pacific Lines #'s 2453, 2454, 2458)? I've pretty much exhausted what's available on the web and other places I know about. Most P-6 shots I've seen are at odd angles. I'm looking for both right and left hand sides either perpendicular to the engine or your standard 3/4 view..

I do have "A Century of Southern Pacific Steam Locomotives", but that's not a lot of help. I probably should have bought Volume 1 of the SP steam pictorial, but didn't and have been kicking myself ever since.

My particular obsession is SP's Monterey Branch and the P-6's were "Del Monte" engines for a number of years prior to dieselization. I'd like to build one using either a Mantua or Bowser (Pennsy K4) chassis as I have no illusion about holding my breath until someone actually brings one out (brass or not).

Thanks for any help you can give.

    Welcome aboard Mike!!

Hopefully someone here has a few. Don't know if you tried my very small selection of steam. Link is in my signature.

    Hi John,

Thanks. Yes, I have been at your site. It seems I've been everywhere looking for pics. There's a pic on the Yahoo Espee site of GS-4 #4442. Right in front of the GS is the tender of P-6 #2454. ARRRRGGGGHHHH!

I just love it when I'm searching for a shot of a particular loco and keep coming up with near misses. Mine are usually just one digit off from what I want. The other day I was searching ebay for one numbered 2502. Found 2500,2501,2503,2504,2505 but not 2502!! Arrrggghhh is right! :D

Here is a T&NO P-6. I will look to see what else I have.

    Thanks, Russ. 2451 is actually a P-5, but I do appreciate the pic of 2456 as well as the T&NO #611. Pacific Lines P-6's were 2453, 2454, 2455, 2456, 2457 and 2458. 2455, 2456, 2457 were transferred to T&NO and became the P-14's.

The pic of 611 is probably the best shot I've seen of a P-6, T&NO or otherwise. The Pacific Lines locos may not have had the Delta trailing truck and booster, but they're close enough. I really needed to see the boiler contour.

Opps, now that I look at it, it is quite different. Straight boiler and different tender. Although tenders did get changed out in some classes. I guess I was focusing on the number.

No biggie. SP liked to play musical tenders. Thank God for that because you can have two physically identical locomotives with a different look because the tenders are different.

BTW, I've visited your Sugarland pics many times over the years. You do good work. I'm in HO scale primarily, but I'll be building a module of Pacific Grove in N scale. Thank God for the Bachmann 2-8-0 which can easily be made to look much like a C-26, C-28 or even the SD&AE C-31's. As for a P-6 in N, I'll probably be using the Model Power USRA light 4-6-2 as a stand-in and buy another later to try and make a P-6 lookalike.

I have a lot of fun trying to bash whatever is available into something that resembles a T&NO locomotive.;)
    I turned a Bachmann 2-8-0 into a C-9.

I used an old Trix mechanism and parts from Kato, Model Power and Bachmann to bash a P-6. The cab end has been lowered a little since I took these photos.

That's slick, what technique did you use to narrow the oil bunker? In HO, I was thinking of getting the IHC Mogul (SP M-4) and using an MDC short Vanderbilt with a narrowed (but not rounded) oil bunker.

Incidentally, with some revisions to the cab and the addition of train indicator boards, the Model Power 2-6-0 in N looks a lot like an M-8. I don't think the T&NO had any, however.

Major kit bash as I recall. I pretty much built up the new oil bunker out of large tubing and sheet styrene. I used small drops of epoxi applied with a stylus for rivets but have since found some cool 3d decals for when I need to do that again.

    Russ,

Somewhere (can't find it, shoulda bookmarked it), you did another kitbash of a Bachmann 2-8-0 only with that one you removed the valve gear. The pic was a bit out of focus, so I couldn't tell if you'd altered the cylinders to more closely resemble those of a true Harriman Consol like this one: http://www.yesteryeardepot.com/SP2534.JPG

I have done only one SP Bachmann Consolidation. I left the stock mechanism pretty much in tact. Are you perhaps remembering this old Rivarossi Mikado?

Russ, I was mistaken. It was someone else who did the mod. It was in a file that contained pics of things you did. http://tinyurl.com/SPConsol

BTW, did you scratchbuild the train indicators on your kitbashes or are the parts available?

Oh, duhh, valve gear as with eccentric cranks and rods on the outside visible. No have not gone that far. Seems like an easy mod.
Those are Detail Associates part #8010.

DA 8010. Got it. Unfortunately, no one seems to have them. At least not that I can see. Is Detail Associates still making N scale steam parts?

I suppose these wouldn't be overly difficult to scratchbuild.

Hey, SD&AE is my middle name!

I built a pair of SD&AE C-31's a while back. Easiest bash ever. may have some pictures in my files. Sacrificed them for my first (and failed) attempt at an N scale SP t-31. YES, a tenwheeler. Now I've modified the bachmann 2-8-0 into an SD&AE C-8 and an SP 4-6-0 #2353! I think the bachmann engine can also be made into an SP TW-class 4-8-0 with some more modifications!
