Saw the above unit hauling through O'Bannon, KY today on the east side of Louisville. No lettering visible, the red undercoat was as visible as the gray paint. Is this 35-year-old unit still on UP's roster or has it gone to a leaser?

I've checked the UP 2001 Roster and Don Strack's UP 2001 roster. The SP 7339 does not show on either one. Who owns it? Is it going to Alstom in Montreal?

I dunno....it still shows in the UP computer, and the UP trace slimjim gave for it shows it. I hadn't seen this unit being retired on any of the retirement lists I've seen. Possibly fell through the cracks in the UP roster books? Might have been overlooked since UP has no plans on keeping the SP SD40R's. [IMG]

Attached is the text of a message posted to Trainorders.com that answered someones question regarding existing SP SD40R's:

    >About 30 at last count, but this was several weeks ago, and several more may have "left the building" since then. Both of the fleet oddballs- SP 7310 and SP 7357- are retired. (spl) denotes speed lettering.

The list looks accurate to the best of my knowlege. For credit purposes, the information was posted by an individual who goes by "SP9794" on Trainorders (I don't know the individuals name).

For reference regarding the oddballs, SP7310 had non-standard lettering, and SP7357 was in SPSF merger "kodachrome" paint.

Here's a pic of SP 7310, for those who might be wondering about that "non-standard" lettering. Also of note, is that on the engineer's side, it has the original "waffle screen" radiator intakes, and on the conductor's side, it has later corrugated grills. Definitely a fun one to model. [IMG] Hard to believe this unit's been retired...I only shot this a few months ago. Things change quickly. :(

And, for those unfamiliar with the SPSF Kodachrome paint, here is a shot of SP7357...

Amazing that such a good looking unit would be retired..

some of the units out there look like they are ready to fall apart any second...

At least you in the states get to see these units!
    :(
