    Greetings,

I am doing some research trying to determine if any Southern painted SD40s or SD40-2s were among the few units that made it into the early 1990s before receiving their NS paint. I have been able to uncover that at least one SD40 (3200) made it into early 1990 before being repainted and also a few SD40-2s made it into 1991.

What I am looking for are specific unit numbers that anyone may have documented (photos, notes or otherwise) of any Southern SD40s or SD40-2s that may have been among those few units still roaming the rails in the early 1990s.

Also, if anyone has specific unit numbers of any N&W painted units (in the final N&W scheme with Norfolk and Western spelled out)that made it into the early 90s before being repainted NS, that would be extremely helpful also.

Thanks for any assistance that can be provided!

    Hi Scott,
Welcome to TrainBoard! It is good to see another "local" railfan [IMG]
As far as SD45's, I don't have pictures of too many, as I started taking train photos about the time they were starting to disappear (they were never that plentiful in my neck of the woods anyway :( ) I think the last photos I have of them in Southern paint are from 1986.
Now as far as the Southern SD40's and SD40-2's, I'll have to check my "archives" (otherwise known as the shoebox [IMG] ) I know I have a lot more SD40/40-2 photos to scan. I'll try to dig some more up. As far as N&W units, I have some of them too.
So, how is the restoration of the depot coming in High Point? I haven't been up that way in a while. Also, do you model trains, and if so, what scale, roads, timeframe??
Check my website (link at bottom) for a few Southern, NS, CSX, and other photos. [IMG]

I am sure some of the experts will weigh in on this topic... good question!

    Harold,

Thanks for the reply and the photos. Maybe you'll come across some SOU or N&W SD40/-2s from the early '90s in your "archive"! I model the NS in HO, say 1990-1995. I'd like to have one or two SOU or N&W six-axles to throw in the mix, hince the search for SD units still around in SOU/N&W paint in the early '90s. I currently don't have a layout, just spend my modeling time superdetailing engines and rolling stock.

Again thanks for posting the photos that you found of the N&W units. If you find any photos from the early '90s of SOU SD40/-2s, I'd love to see em!

    Hi Scott,
I looked through my old photos and have not come up with anything yet (although I do have more to go through). [IMG]
