Anyone got good pictures or know where I can find pictures of southen pacific's Sacramento locomotive shops? Preferably as it appeared in the 70's and 80's. Thanks John
Here's SP's Sacramento shops in the 1930s: From Southern Pacific 1901-1985 by Don Hofsommer, TA&M U Press, 1986.
I second the book James linked to. Amazing stuff. Here's a link to a tour that includes some modern photos. A simple Google images search of "southern pacific sacramento shops" will also help, perhaps.
hmm, Bummer, looks like I would have to scratch build an N scale transfer table. Oh well I can always Freelance a loco facility.
Were you planning on running locomotives through all of the buildings? If not, you could easily make a transfer table with a fixed bridge. The cool part is the turntable and 1/2 round house behind the shops. You could alwys go to the CA RaiRoad Museum, on the second floor is an amazing model of the shops you can look at. If I wasn't a fan of the ATSF and already building the Barstow Yard facility circa 1955, I really could jump al over the Sacramento shops! The tough part of the shops is the orientation of windows and doors and the celestory windoos are not like any thing close so it is truely a really craftsman level kit bash. Fortunately, most of the remaing buildings are to be spared the wreking ball as part of the redevelopment of the rail years here in Sacramento. The shops and the station are real wonderful architectural marvels that refelct back to a time where craftmen were kings!
Espee Trainline, the SPHTS magazine has had several articles on Sacramento shops. One of the most recent was the WWII bombs exploding in the class yard sometime in 1940-1945.
