I am not sure what type of car it is but on Hwy 45 just north of Marion and Meridian, Ms. there is a scrap yard. In the middle of the yard is a bright silver Southern RR car. It appears to be a Pullman. I will try to get a snap of it and post it for identification.

I got the pics and the name on the car is "Warrior River". Anyone know the history of this Southern equipment?

Based on my quick and dirty Google search it was in a lot better shape in Apirl 27, 2007 as a private car so I wonder what happen to it since then.

It was built by Pullman and delivered in 1949. It was built for service on the joint Southern/FEC Royal Palm. Was part of 46 cars in Lot 6814, Plan 4140, 10 Roomette, 6 Bedroom Sleepers. It went to Amtrak as #2861 in 1979. Looks like it was wrecked recently.

    Found this from another site

It was posted a few days ago that 'Moonlight Dome's been purchased by the Promontory Chapter NRHS in Salt Lake City, UT., to replace their es-SOU sleeper 'Warrior River' which was damaged beyond repair in a derailment about a year ago while escorting a shipment of rocket boosters from ATK in Utah to NASA in Florida. Some chapter members were also injured in the derailment. I'm not sure if they intend to use Moonlight Dome in the same service.

I remember that UP derailment, it happened in MS I think. The tracks had washed out from heavy rains earlier.

That would be the reason then why it is in a salvage yard just north of Meridian on Hwy. 45. How sad.

The Southern's "Warrior River" pullman still rolls in '1/4 scale' on the SCRS. MTH issued it with a Rocket Booster train set for transporting the crews. I had my dealer break it out of the set and it is now part of the Southern Crescent's consist (twelve cars total).

Sorry to bump a two month old thread, but does anyone have more information on the fate of this car? Its sad to see it in the state its in, it looked beautiful before the wreck. Has the Promontory Chapter sold it for scrap, or is it just in storage there? Its now been almost a year since the wreck. I sure hope it doesnt go to scrap, would be sad to see such a historic car be cut up, especially when it looks as if it would be perfectly fine for cosmetic restoration.

Yup! I drove by it on the way back from Naval Air Station Meridian in around November 4th and saw that most of the outer trim and stainless has been stripped off of her. She is no more. Very sad.
