One of my cousins recently reveiled to me he's modeling the Rock Island in N-Scale. He sent this question to me last night.

Are there any good sound systems out there that have a throttle or power pack to run N or HO scale Trains?

I've told him about the MRC [IMG] sound pack and one other that I can't remember the producers name. [IMG] After getting a good nights sleep, it seems to me this DANDY unit that has "All the bells and whistles" [IMG](litterally) was or is made by DigiTracks. Any help out there guys?

Its made by SoundTrax. They also have a compleate digital docoader with sound. It probably wont fit N scale but does fit nicely in HO scale tenders...Mike

That might be the one. Does it have a wireless control, momentum, braking, different prime movers to chose from, compressor relief "PSSST", one-two-three or six chime horn and bell? If it has all that, THAT'S THE ONE! That system ROCKS! I hope it's still on the market. All you need is a power supply and a decent home stereo system.

To use SoundTrax in N scale I think it is possible to install the system in a dummy loco or box car. I think you can get away with this by assigning the soundtrax sound decoder the same ID as the loco. I have not tried any of this and I am not sure that it will work. It seems to be kind of a pain in the rear to keep track which cars go with certain locos.

What about static sound systems? How do these sound and are they worth looking into?

    Thanks
    Matt

Thanks for the help guys! I hope my Cuz will come here soon and start joining in the fun. The SoundTraks unit I got to play with used a stereo system, not a dummy or box car for sound. I scared the owners of the shop next to us one day when I cranked up the volume! They thought a train was coming through the wall at them! [IMG] Sure was funny! Are there any other units out there and what are the features? Chime in please...

I bought a DSD SoundTRax decoder mit speaker for an Athern 2-8-2 and am waiting for my 2-8-0 and another 2-8-2 from Tony's Train Exchange. What a difference. If you have DCC whether it's Diesel or Steam, it will blow you away. There's all kinds of background sounds as well to ehance the atmosphere. My system is HO but they do it in N as well. If you have DC buy the Soundtrax self contained unit. I heard it at my hobby shop. It sounded great.

I know they make N scale parts. But I where woudl they be installed and how do they sound? The speakers for N scale would have to be real small. Also, For being so small, how good would they sound? Just some thoughts.

Chris, what DCC system are you using? Do you need to use their controler or will the sounds work with ant DCC system ? I use the MRC system which is fairly limited. I think it will work with any sustem as long as you can address the function controls . Is this Right?

Ok I'll try to answer your questions:
"I know they make N scale parts. But I where woudl they be installed and how do they sound? The speakers for N scale would have to be real small. Also, For being so small, how good would they sound?"

The speaker goes in the tender for steam, for diesel [I don't have any] I think would go in a B unit.

A speaker can be very small, but as long as it has an airtight enclosure it can sound great. [remember when Hi-Fi speakers were hughe, now look at some of the Boze]. Some guys use containers like 35mm film cans and the like.

"Chris, what DCC system are you using? Do you need to use their controler or will the sounds work with ant DCC system ? I use the MRC system which is fairly limited. I think it will work with any sustem as long as you can address the function controls . Is this Right?"

As far as I know the Soundtrax have an NMRA DCC Conformance which means they'll work with anyone's cab. I have a Lenz 01 F1 is headlight; F2=whistle; F3=Bell. I've programmed the Hissss to automatically occurr when the train stops, I've also programmed Fred the fireman, air pump, hydraulic grease gun to operate in a random sequence.

    Hope this helps
