I was thinking of your 'Rare' topic the other day. My mind's eye was saying the lettering on the hood was a little easier to read than this one.
Do you mean THIS 2232? Shot this back in the summer of 2005. I love that dirt "ballast", too.......... ; Here's a similar unit that used to be in Saratoga, WY on the now abandoned Encampment Branch: Puts the "blue" in bluebonnet.................
When the photo was taken it was in service. The train had derailed (something the MAW was famous for) and the engineer had brought the locomotive to the next crossing, tied it down, and left with the crew car/truck (MAW crew would "chase" the 5mph trains in a vehicle to flag crossings and generally check track conditions if needed). Pioneer took over the property and #16 was shipped off to a new owner, I have no idea what happened to it other than that it may be operating on the Connersville & New Castle in Indiana. It was in rough physical and mechanical shape when CSX hauled it off of the former MAW.
BTW- What has happened to the MAW? I'd heard they were sold? But nothing more. Has the new owner stepped up with some track dollars?
MAW was bought by Pioneer Railcorp and is being operated as the Napoleon, Defiance & Western. They have done tons of work on the physical plant and winning back customers. Huge difference. I did a blog post about a railfan trip, a link is in my signature. It's a nice little railroad these days. The track still needs a bit of work but they are actually working almost every day to improve service. They even brushed the Defiance Yard: And a little urban switching:
OMLX SW #1200, formerly Atlas? Sitting outside the OmniTrax shops in Loveland. The remains of Central Kansas RY #2232 hidden behind it! Haven't been able to get out and about of late! Especially now, with my truck undergoing MORE unaffordable repairs!! This time, the Timing Chain Tensioner and/or Timing Chain Guide.
Color hints at this unit being ex-BNSF? Busted vehicle syndrome. Been there, done that. Been there, done that. Repeat sequence unendingly.
But Bubba....... You told me to thin it good for spraying!! :teeth: I just thinned it until it matched the truck! :teeth:
