Nice pictures! And that looks like my kind of vacation trip, being one of the steam nuts on this board. Do you have any more? [IMG]

That locomotive certainly put up quite a show! Is it a pacific? Could not make out the wheel arrangement due to all that steam [IMG]

Hey Alan, It looks like a 2-8-2, or a 2-8-4.......

It's a 2-8-0 Consolidation. More info can be found at the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad site. http://www.gsmr.com/

I saw the loco in 1965 waiting on a passing siding near my house when it was on its way to Bay St Louis, Mississippi and New Orleans for filming of the movie "This Property Is Condemned". The loco was built for the US Army during WW-II, then was sold to the Reader Railroad in Arkansas after the war. I don't know what her history was between the Reader and the GSMR, but she looks good in the photos.

The one thing that struck me as unique when I saw her up close was her large boiler relative to her frame and running gear. She must be one heckuva steamer  .... Watash would have a ball playing with her

Hello all I bought a book and video on the trip, here is info on the engine. Road no is #1702 it is a 2-8-0 from baldwin built in 1942, it was built to operate in Europe( the cab and the stack & sandbox where made smaller than normal). In 1947 the army sold it to the Warren & Saline River Railroad in Arkansas. In 1964 it was sold to the Reader Railroad in Arkansas, here it was converted from a coal to oil burner. In 1982 it was sold to the Freemont & Elkhorn Northern in Nebraska. The GSMRR bought it from them in 1991. The GSMRR raised the stack, modified the sandbox, and widened the cab to make it look more american.

That info is from the book and is all I have on the engine......
