    hey there,
wile looking around at many different milwaukee road loco photos i noticed some had differen logos on the locos. such as this one: [IMG]

was this one made before or after the logo that just say milwaukee road in block letters on the nose of the locos. and when did they use the actual slanted box logo. i am looking for some sort of simple timeline here.

I believe around 1982 or so after the closer of all Lines West, They went for a new image which was the Hiawatha emblem on the noses of the loco's instead of lettering for a more modern image. Also, the sides were painted in a semi-lightning style bordering the black and orange, and the white locomotive side numbers were moved from top center on the sides to the rear flanks in black color. So ya, I think it was around mid-'82. [IMG]

In the picture, you can just make out the lightning stripe slant between the first and second handrail stanchion.

Oh, and the slanted box logo has been around since I think the 1920's? When it first was put on steam loco's and rolling stock, it had the whole name, "Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, & Pacific", in the slanted box. I can see why they shortend it!!

The Hiawatha emblem/lightning bolt black edge was introduced at Milwaukee Shops. (Milwaukee, Wisconsin.) Where officials held a ceremony on November 9, 1983. The first unit done was SD40-2 #201. The idea came from Art Danz, who was at that time a Milw Trainmaster. Art is also a past president of the Milwaukee Road Historical Association.

The "Milwaukee Road" on nose and sides was first introduced on an order of new SD40-2 units in late 1973. It was then applied to all new purchased SD40-2, the second order of GP38-2, and the MP15ac units. Then they went back, and started applying this to the first order of SD40-2, FP45, SD45, GP38-2, GP40. It was then applied to the "GP20" and "SD10" rebuild programs. Later, some GP30, and GP9 units.

The Milwaukee Road's tilted rectangle logo was in use as early as 1880. The first change came in 1909. When it was altered, and applied to equipment of the western lines' Chicago, Milwaukee & Puget Sound Railway Company.

There were seven official variants over the years. The last, simplified version, was placed in service beginning February of 1953. On an order of, I believe, SD7 engines. I'd need to check on this.

There were at least two official variants of the Hiawatha "Running Indian" logo. The one used in late years on diesels also had seen use on passenger trains.

cool thanks guys, so as a ruff estimate how many sd40-2's actually got the repaint of the running indian logo before the milwaukee was gone?

also is there a good registry/roster for the milwaukee somewhere on th net that is just as good as the bn one, which includes many pics.

While there are a bunch of good sites, I can't think of an all comprehensive Milw Page. Here's a good one that might get you started:

    Cory-

That would be Hiawatha. Namesake for the Milw trains. Remember the wording ..."Swift of foot was Hiawatha..." Hence he is the "Running Indian."
