I'm not so sure I saw this very same B40-8 based in Cordele last summer.......and I've shot here at Manchester last May. Cool place, esp.with the railfan platform!
Just curious- Did that white paint actually help with some relief from heat? I'd want to believe that if so, most their units today would also have this same treatment? Boxcab E50
I wonder if the white paint is to indicate that the unit is actually a "slug" and doesn't have a diesel engine in it anymore - just controls, concrete for weight in place of the engine, and motors still working in the trucks but taking power from the host units...
Supposedly like Boxcab said, it's for heat relief. RJ Corman has hired a couple of former CSX execs. as higher-ups in his company, and now white roofs are starting to show up on the Corman stuff.
Hmmm. Looking at the hood, is there an exhaust stack anywhere? I don't see one. Just a DB fan. Boxcab E50
No need for an exhaust stack when all there is inside in concrete. Dynamic brakes do work on these slugs, however.
CSXT 2200-23XX series are all Road Slugs (From GP30-s, 35s and a couple 38's). Geared like a normal locomotive, but the traction motors draw their electric from the GP40-2 "mother" unit. They have full controls inside, crews prefer to oeprate from the slugs since they are quiet, without a prime mover. White roofs are standard with all of the new paint jobs in Dark Future paint....slugs (with cabs), switchers, AC44's, SD40-2's, etc......
The white roofs are for heat relief and still seem to be showing up on newer repaints. The white just really stands out on the GP30 slugs because of the unique shape of the roof.
A lot of photos we see, seem to be taken at a lower angle. Down at trackside. So that might be a reason why I'm not used to seeing many of these. We sure need more overhead views. For the modelers out there. Boxcab E50
Here's another slug set with the white roofs. The white doesn't stand out so well on the all gray units. At Kennesaw GA - 2004
Now that I'm looking more closely, I've obviously been missing that white roof detail. The gray does help it to blend in. Perhaps that's partly why I'd overlooked them. Boxcab E50
