This photo is unique for many reasons: #1) We don't get a lot of snow around here #2) The location (Boylan Jct. was one of the oldest interlocking controlled junctions... the tower stood in the RH bottom corner of the photo #3) The lines represented are multiple and historic: The line crossing from left to right is the "original" Norfolk Southern line from Raleigh to Fayetteville (N.C.) The track that the CSX train is on is shared with "new" NS... the CSX line comes from Hamlet while the NS line comes from Charlotte.... they run parellel and share some trackage from about Cary to Raleigh. Come down in the summer.... temps from the 80's to the 90's (but humidity in the 85%+ range) Actually, Raleigh is a poor railfan site (for action), but we could slip down to Hamlet, Rocky Mount or other more active places... Harold
Nice shot Harold! Yes it is rare to see snow in your area! Spectacular shot none the less! Almost looks model-like with the headlights an ditch lights!
I've looked at the photo a couple of times now. And with mention of the old NS RY, keep thinking I've seen an article in a magazine about the NS RY, that had a similar view? Does that sound familiar at all? This would have been probably 1985-1995 time frame? Boxcab E50
Nice Pic, Harold. Looks to be an Ex-Conrail unit by the location of the top light being above the windows instead of the nose.
Very likely..... it is the most popular railfan site in Raleigh It used to be quite busy, being on the Seaboard Air Line's "S" line [the Main line from Richmond, Va. thru Hamlet, N.C. and on to Florida] plus the Southern /NS freights. I have some photos somewhere that show the old interlocking tower..... Harold
I would have been fun to spend a day in a tower. Imagine the view! Trains close enough that you could almost reach out and touch them. Boxcab E50
Here's a link to a photo at the tower that one of my fellow local railfans took: http://www.trainweb.org/zeniphotos/SOU3978.jpg Harold
