In my endeavor for a 3x5'-5x5' active layout, I now have the March Model Railroader, I like the coffee table layout. Now I would like build it up for a switcher, or two, and or a gp xx-x. I have a boat load of 40' cars. Point is what is the tightest you guys have run your curves.

Not quite the answer you're seeking, but BE CAREFUL with that March MR coffee table article...it is WRONG, the article and the sidebar both...the layout can not be built with 12" minimum radius curves, and still fit on a 27" wide table...because of the the 3-track loop design, it either takes a minimum table width of about 34", or you have to go down to about 9" minimum radius curves.
I sent in an email to MR, and I'm expecting a correction or retraction in the May MR, but not holding my breath.[ :D ]
Anyway, curves under 18" radius are really not suitable for standard equipment, even older GP-7 sized engines, but very small industrial switchers are ok, down to 12"R.

I wouldn't build that coffee table layout unless I went to N scale. 12" radius is OK for N.

I wouldn't go any less than 18" radius for even the switcher types, although you could use the Bachmann Spectrum 44-ton or 70-ton diesel, modified to stay coupled around curves, if you used 15" radius (and only in industrial spurs).
