September 25, 2007 The nonprofit Pacific Locomotive Association, which operates the Niles Canyon Railway, is sponsoring a double headed steam excursion over the Sierra Railroad on Nov. 4 from Oakdale to Cooperstown and back, a 38-mile round trip. Powered by Sierra No. 28 and Virginia and Truckee No. 18, formerly of the McCloud River Railroad, the train will feature vintage Southern Pacific Harriman coaches and two of the only three Mountain Observation cars ever built. The train is scheduled to leave Oakdale at 9 a.m. and, after various photo run-bys, return about 5 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person for association members, $89 for non-members.
