    is this metal box for the padlock, a standard detal, a NS thing, or a shop mutation? I have never noticed this detail on either a model or prototype before.

    Yes Sir, a lock holder. I've seen these on NS units and some CN/CP units as well.

    The UP has them as well. I've often wondered why CSX hasn't followed suit given the locations that trains are left unattended.
