I thought I would introduce this to The Pit so modellers of all scales could show off there latest work on their layout, latest locomotive or rollingstock purchase or anything new to their hobby. Yes I did get the idea from another forum but I feel it has merit that we get to see what others are doing and not scale specific. So grab your cameras take a shot over the weekend and post here. I will be posting my pics in the next few hours. Don't forget if you have nowhere to store your pics online then apply for a free account at Rail Images
Here are pictures taken of my latest acquisition. purchased 10 impack cars from Alan Curtis. Ok so I have kicked this along lets see more pics from you guys and as many scales as possible [ 14. February 2003, 22:21: Message edited by: Colonel ]
Well it is almost Saturday So I will go ahead and post a pic with a small story. The Grande Valley has just recently been granted a contract to haul coal northward from southern coalfields. The only problem is we don't have enough cars for the job. We have been buying up any 100 ton hopper car that we can get ahold of ,and have been converting them in our own shops. This is an old AHM or modern Con-Cor 100 ton 4 bay covered hopper The hoppers were covered with Evergreen strip styrene and ribs were made from the same material. These cars will cost me about $7.50 a piece when done (I only want 100 of them )
Paul, here a couple of rather crappy pics of what I have done on the layout this week. I admit these don't show much ,but the whole long wall is now layout table Hopefully by next weekend there will be some track laid here.
Well, I've been busy too! I built these 2 little structures. The upper one is my sand house. Instead of filling it with sand and gluing it, I used a worn out foam backed sanding pad. This worked out real good cause the color ant texture is very realistic. I just dusted it with chalk powder, and it looks like scale sand in the bin. Gluing would have warped the sand bin. This is scratchbuilt following Rio Grande Chama NM Prototype and is uncovered where the NP would have been covered, but I like the open sand bin look better. They call it Modelers License, I call it My Layout! The lower structure is a STS #30008 Yard Storage Building laser kit. They only cost $8 at BLW, and I think they have nice character. Of course I painted in the typical NP sand/brown scheme to keep the flavor of my favorite road. Also you can see some track missing at the left. The module seen at the bottom of the picture is the last one needing conversion to Peco code 55 from Atlas code 80.
Well.... I got a Chessie slug done, painted an awaiting on decals done, an a Western Maryland slug in the design stages! Awaiting for the frame to be finished, and the slug body itself to be designed an made. Those 2 are the first an latest things I started. However I got 2 Baldwin RF-16's, to make B&O passenger livery "Sharks" to complete, in the blue/gray/with black cigar band to do as a set, then to get 2 other "Shark" bodies to hack up into a B unit from 2 A units an paint it to match the 2 A units. And then, the BIG job, to paint up a set of E-8's in a ABBA consist in the same sceme as the B&O RF-16's.... Sadly, I don't have no pictures of this being as always my digiatal camera isn't worth the time it took to manufacture it! Not for this kinda picture taking anyway! I do get to boarrow a friends tho... I will have pictures of these all an a few others!
Yes Paul, completely removed in two days Amazing how long they take to build, but how quickly they can be dismantled But whilst I was removing it, I was already thinking about the new one

When are we going to see the new design?
Well, this is an S scale F unit. My newest project. It will end up in WP green and orange. Greg Elems
The Grande Valley shops are busy rebuilding old 100 ton hoppers of all types to meet our needs These cars range from (1)reworked covered hoppers to (2) old 4 bay coal hoppers ,to (3)refurbished Johnstown Coal porters. All have rotary couplers on one end (hence the light grey end) installed. 6 down 94 to go.This is how I spent my weekend. . Here's a couple pix of the unfinished cars in action.
Wow, Nice pictures everyone! Greg, are you going to remove the bottom headlight and modify the passenger pilot to resemble the freight pilot on your F unit? It's amazing how seeing a favorite locomotive in another scale can really start you dreaming, a friend who models the WP in O Scale was showing me the F3 AB set he custom painted and I found myself wondering how much I could get for my HO & N scale stuff. And if it would be enough to get started in O Scale, thankfully I snapped out of my dream when I realized I haven't got room for a N scale switching layout much less space for O scale stuff. Good thing dreaming is still reasonably priced.... 2slim
2slim, the SHS F units were undecorated, and come with a nose door without the headlight and a freight pilot. Basically all I'm going to have to do now is drill the holes for the extra nose grab irons and the grab irons over the front windows. I will add the radio antenna like the WP had. The biggest pain will be getting the grab irons that are already installed off the shell without bending them all to heck. I haven't decided if I will change the fuel tank to more resemble the WP 15k tank or leave it as is. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this project. Greg Elems
Besides these 2 structures I built this week, I converted these 2 RS-1's to DCC. I found a trick to get the bottom motor wire up without a Dremel... I held a sewing needle on the side of the motor parallel with the brushes and heated with a soldering iron to melt a channel for the wire. I also just used my rail nippers to remove 3 tabs of metal from the frame to make room for the wires and decoder. It worked out great! Mmm, this NP Mike is bringing some Yakima Apples into town, and the water is so clear in that stream that you can see it's Black with Steelhead!
