I've heard about short lines being dressed up like Friscos, but haven't actually seen any except for this unit and a sister unit (2000 I believe) The pics I've seen never give enough detail to determine what company this is, except that I can make out what looks like a "Steel" logo on the nose, and the name of the company looks rather long. Pics are dated mid/early 90's in the Ft Worth area always lashed with a BN unit. Any ideas? Anybody have pics of other short lines like this?? Just curious!! Cheers. -Mike [ 09. What you shot there came from the Colorado & Wyoming, specificaly their southern branch out of Walsenburg, CO. They had two GP38-2s used to run a unit coal train east from the mine loadout to the Joint Line interchange. IIRC, that mine is no longer running, and that line is gone. The 2001 may have been leased to BN in a motive power crunch. Another RR that uses colors remarkably close to Frisco's is the Galveston Wharves, which operates a fleet of switchers.
Cool! That helped me find a better pic... [all pics courtesy of George Elwood's site, naturally, is there any other source? heh] Although the caption claims this to be an ex-SLSF unit, I don't think so based on the tiny fuel tank - the nose mounted light and horns could have been changed over time, but I don't think BN messed with the tanks and certainly didn't make them smaller, no?? The Central Oregon and Pacific also has some GP38s in Frisco paint. They can usually be found at the ex-SP yard in Eugene OR.
Nope, C&W's GP38s were their own order- they just borrowed a rather tasteful paint scheme None of Frisco's GP38ACs or Dash 2s ever got fuel tanks that small, and AFAIK BN hasn't messed with the size on any GP38 at all. BTW, I believe I was wrong about where their coal went- I believe it was suppsoed to go to the CF&I steel mill in Pueblo.
