Hello-- I am seeking a set of N-Scale Milwaukee Hiawatha passenger cars. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve Williams
I don't know if any ready to run cars have ever been sold outside of imported brass. Here are some kits if you are up to it. N Scale 1942 Hiawatha Passenger Cars
Russell, Have you built these kits? I was wondering if they come with decals and if they're reasonably accurate... do they pass the 3 foot rule? I am not worried about whether they are down to the rivet spot-on. I would love to kit-build another passenger consist.
I think Kato will be coming out with it next year, so go the rumors. Another flag I will have to buy.
It was either on this forum or the Atlas forum. It may have been hopeful speculation on someone part and I said yea, let's go with it to myself. The little gray cells may be slipping a bit. I do know that I read it somewhere but it was not an official announcement from a manufacturer.
Well, we're probably getting close to the time when Kato should start leaking something out to their big dealers, then an official announcement.
No, I have never built any of the GHQ passenger car kits. However I have built plenty of cars up from the American Limited core kits, (which you have to purchase extra for these GHQ kits), and M&R brass sides. Should be about the same. Does not say they come with decals so you may have to get those from Microscale. GHQ products are usually quite accurate.
If you can paint and decal, or know someone who can, these from JnJ are nice, and cheaper then brass. Products
What era are you seeking? Or does it matter? Raiwlay Classics did a some post-WII cars in brass. Probably long ago sold out. Check their web site, then start looking at hobby shop, and auction listings. Boxcab E50
What's kind of sad is that most of the cars used in the excursion service ARE NOT original MILW cars... some are former Amtrak LePub lounge cars rblt. from U.S. Army hospital cars, two coaches are ex-Algoma Central nee-Central of Georgia, etc. But still , to be able to ride behind that Beautiful MILW streamer... heck I would ride even if it was simply gondolas with benches!!!
Also GHQ makes car sides and castings for the 1942 version of a Hiawatha. N Scale 1942 Hiawatha Passenger Cars
Actually, the three coaches were originally built for the PRR, the diner was the Army medical services car, and the Cedar Rapids Skytop Lounge is an original Hiawatha car.
That is correct. "Cedar Rapids"-Skytop Lounge, "Super Dome #53"-Full Dome, And "Minnesota River"-Sleeper are all Original Milwaukee Road cars. All three are Amtrak compatable, and will be on 261's excursions in Milwaukee this June.
I have build 3 of the GHQ kits, and they are as difficult as any other brass car side kit. The accuracy and quality of the etching is very good, the sides are really 3-dimensional. I am trying to build a 1949 representation of the Milwaukee's "Columbian", so I need a good mix of heavyweight head-end and sleepers plus a few streamline coaches. Currently still unpainted, but getting there (eventually)... The Milwaukee tracks were not ready at the time the picture was taken, so I posed the train at Stampede Pass. I can recommend the GHQ cars, though the JnJ might be easier to build.... Cheers Dirk
Don't forget to check with Brass Car Sides... they have a few side sets available or in the works, as does Athabasca... http://www.brasscarsides.com http://www.athabascashops.com/
