Hi, anyone here interested in the S&NCRR? It was a local railroad here in Western Washington that bought the barge and rail system from the Milwaukee Road after they pulled out of the west. They owned a little of trackage here in Seattle on the waterfront, the barge system up to Port Towsend, and the rail line from there to Port Angeles. Really interesting line, but it only survived from 1980 to 1985 when it to went bankrupt. The coolest part about it was besides the barge system, was that it ran F-units and three SW's in a really nice paint scheme and the boxcars that matched, which a couple still survive to this day. Just a nod to another Fallen Flag.
Me. I have a bunch of info on the web page: Seattle & North Coast RR info Seattle & North Coast Railroad Company Reporting marks SNCT. Incorporated September 20, 1979. Operated March 24, 1980 through June 2, 1984. Court ordered to abandon, and dissolve corporation December 17, 1984. The assets were offered publicly by the Trustee, with an ending date of January 21, 1985. No proposals were received. The assets were then liquidated. The railroad scrapped. Neat setting. Had some possibilities. Was not well led. Boxcab E50
S&NC turned a bunch of their boxcars back to Itel Rail around the time they shut down. Not the green ones with the yellow stripes on the doors, but brown ones with white lettering. A bunch of those cars are still in storage today on the McCloud Railway, now owned by GE Capital. Some still wear full S&NC lettering, and some have been "patched"...all are numbered in the MR 11000 series. I have a picture of one of the patched cars on my McCloud Rails page at the following: http://www.trainweb.org/mccloudrails/Equipment/Boxcars.html JDLX Elko, MV
The brown ones were from BRAE. I remember when the first green ones arrived in Seattle. Were switched to the S&NC at their yard by Pier 27. I raced down there in a rain storm, and got wet. Just to see them. Too dark for pictures. Boxcab E50
Latest Trains magazine has a photo on the last page of 2 F units, still in BN paint. The page talks about the article in Trains long ago about the S&NC. Photo by Blair Kooistra.
Whenever I see one of those boxcars, I take a pic. Ya never know if you'll see one again. Last one I saw was in Yakima a couple years back when I took the Amtrak special over there. So far, even though I'm in Z-scale now, I have all the N-scale boxcars I could find, even the brown one from Micro-Trains and 5 different road #'s from Roundhouse, all in green and yellow! Always wanted to build a car-float and get a Life-Like switcher and have it painted in SNCT colors to match my cars and build a pier 27!! One day I guess.
I have been to the S&NC web site many of times over the years, but haven't seen an update or anything new in quit awhile. What's up? Anything new lately? Sure would like to see some pics! Or even purchase some good ones!
I believe the fellow who runs that web site has some info to add. But life keeps him busy with a lot of other stuff. He is a member here. Pops in on occasion. Maybe he'll see this thread. It's hard to add much more, as the RR existed for such a short time. But there are a few questions and points of confusion. Such as on a couple of passenger cars. I do want to find out more on the m-o-w stuff they acquired. Ballast cars, etc. #'s, from who, how many? They also had some that were borrowed from the UP. As the years have gone by, the few resources available have dried up, and gone away. So it's a tough task. Boxcab E50
