All, After I researched the GMD SW1200MG Locomotive .. this popped up for THE GMD SW1200MG https://www.pinterest.com/pin/464996730256492946 -Pinterest- , I would hate to see what they call a GG1 to a ALDP 45 etc! see photo. Tom
OK, then. The locomotive was simply the electric version of a switcher that was stretched out to nearly double the length and streamlined. It had two cabs but neither was used, as it was basically a big model train. All rightie then. It used a large electric motor to turn the main generator, so there would be electricity for the wheel motors. Which is pretty much a verbatim cut and paste of Wikipedia's entry. It sounds like a joke. Was this merely cheaper than transformers and rectifiers? Did they do that to avoid developing AC traction motors that would operate on the customer's voltage? As for looks (when they aren't on Pinterest) they're flat-topped switchers on Blombergs.
