Anyone know if the SP had these(SDP-40's)? I can't find a proto picture anywhere. Can anyone direct me to an online picture?

Traindude: Espee never had any SDP40s, they had 10 of the larger SDP45s. Look for pix of the SP 3200-3209 series.

The SDP40 was originally built for the Great Northern (6) and National of Mexico (14). The units also wore BN, MRL and GCFX paint. Of course Athearn has probably made thousands of them.

    Guys,
You know what the basic loco was for a SDP-40 right???? It was a passenger version of an SD-40 with all the nessity to pull "The Varnish". But the SDP-45's I believe were to be the same basic thing like an SD-45 but passenger equipt as well.. Just a strange looking SD-40 to me more or less with the complete square rear hood... But I too have one or 2 of them by Athearn but in the B&O "Solid Dip" paint scheme and the B&O never had any SDP-40's but its a nice freelanced loco overall....... Just like the DD-40 in Athearn. They should have the wide cab nose and so on, plus the UP is the only railroad I know to have bought the first and last 69 units (if I'm correct 69 units were to the UP) No other railroad bought them dirrect from EMD.. But I have 3 of the DD-40's in B&O as well..

One is the singled motor (older version), the second is the older 2 motored version and the last one is the new 2 motored version. Only one of them I left factory painted. The rest I painted to be the different B&O paint schemes... The dual striped B&O all blue and "Baltimore And Ohio" written out on its long hood and the other one was the "solid dip" paint scheme (factory one) and the last one I painted for the "Sunburst scheme"... All pull nice but... HATES 18 inch radius curves. Another reason I went to bigger radius curves.... :D Beside my obsecion of LARGE steam... :D But all will haul a decent sized train with 2 on the point and one on the rear pushing to keep up the slack...... Its model railroading guy.... Use you "Modeler Liecence" Its all in good fun and reliving what have could been.. This is where it happens... :D

Well it looks like the SP has an SPD-40 in their fleet now! I found an Athearn for $10 and couldn't pass it up. Thanks for all the input and the picture site! ;)

    traindude,
I got all my SDP-40's in B&O by Athearn for $12.75 each and all are powered with dual flywheels so.. I didn't do to bad But the B&O didn't have any but I still bought them although they make a nice freelanced B&O loco so.... :D B&O all the way for me! No matter what it might be.. :D my obcession I guess...

Just a note on domestic double diesels on DD trucks. UP is by far the champion of these very large machines. They rostered 47 of the DDA40X wide cabs #6900-6946 built in 1969-1971. They also rostered 27 of the cabless DD35s #72B-98B built 1963-1964 and 15 of the DDA35s #70-84 with cabs. The Southern Pacific rostered three of the cabless DD35s #8400-8402 original numbers.

I thought SP had something of the sort but I was right about it not being a DD-40 with a cab... They probably used them as booster units like the F-7a's and the F-7b's.... But UP dominated on the market overall for any of them DD-35 cabless or cabed version and the same for the DD-40 cabless or cabed version....

If I remember correctly, the "DD40" which Athearn produced never existed. It was basically two GP40's with flared radiators, and was, I think in the EMD catalogue, but none were purchased. Then the more powerful DDA40X was produced, so Athearn had 'jumped the gun' with the model!
