I bought a KATO SD80MAC 2 days ago and I brought it home and started to follow the instructions, I shows how to install rapido-type couplers, but I couldn't figure it out. Can anyone suggest a replacement coupler and pocket replacement for the engine, will a rapido-type fit in the place of the knuckle coupler? IOt is 9:30 and I'm going to the hobby store at 12 immediate Help would be immencely appreciated.

There is a very good procedure, complete with pictures, on the Kato Website, www.katousa.com

Click on the consumers tab, then scroll on the left to N Coupler Conversion, Hood Units.

    Hope this helps.

While not directly related to your question, there is a good article in the Jan/Feb 2002 "N Scale Railroading" about how to disassembly/reassemble the Kato SD80/90 locomotives. The article includes detailed photos of each step. Hope this is helpful.

Remove the body mounts with a small screwdriver.

The MT 2004-1 is assembled and a very easy swap.

Takes about a minute to change.

Micro-trains's web page has a conversion chart. For the Sd80/90 wse the 2004s (available assembled or un-assembled) for curves over 12inch radius. Use 2001s for tighter turns. For 9 3/4 inch curves your only choice is to use the extra long Kato couplers.
