I thought I saw in one of the posts that the modeler indicated Kato was doing the SD70. When I go to Kato's site, I don't see this loco or an annoucement. Did I miss something, or perhaps doing a lousy job of surfering? Is the SD70 for sure

A "teaser" announcement is on the Kato USA
website but it is well hidden

It is in the lower RH corner of their 2002
    New Models poster.

Not to mince words, but Kato is releasing the sd70MAC, not the DC version sd70, sd70m, sd70I, etc. I for one will be ordering some undec Atlas sd50/sd60 shells "spartan cab", to do some kitbashing. while there are some length differences between a straight 70 and a 70 mac, I can live with that. this kitbash will be much easier than say changing a c44-9w into a ac4400. That little kitbash needs the attention of a major manufacturer!!! Someone making a AC cabinet that could be grafted onto a c44-9w will make a TON of moula....
One last editorial comment... with Uncle Pete ordering one thousand sd70's (can't remember if they are M's or I's, but they are a wide cab) and many of these UP 70''s have the "winged" UP herald on the nose, seems to me like somebody (other than Overland) will surely do a straight 70. Apply Murphy's law of kitbashing here, as SOON as I finish a set of NS sd70's (spartan cab), somebody will make it available. Why do I even try :)

    have a great week!!

With all the new activity in N I don't think I would rush out and start chopping up Kato SD70MACs and Atlas bodyshells.... although the one sure way of getting the prototype you want is to finish a scratchbuilt or kitbashed model!!!

Just what are the MAJOR diffrences between a 70 and a 70MAC?Modelling the UP,I don't think I'll wait until that day when someone makes a straight 70,I'll probably buy a couple and paint and decal my own.(on second thought,do I really want to know the diffrences?Ignorance is bliss!)

    All of UP's SD70's are SD70M's.

UP 3974-3999 are ex SP except for UP 3985.
    UP 4000-5126.
UP 2001 & 2002 also have 4XXX numbers. Will revert to those when repainted.

Actually, the SD70MAC looks a lot more externally like an SD60, but still has the SD70 Prime Mover, the 710G3B. Best way to describe it is to look at two photos and compare.
