Hi, I ussaly hang out on the BN and N scale forum but I had a question regarding a SF engine so I wisely came here. I am trying to add details to a SF SD40 in Blue/Yellow bonnet. I have only found a few pictures but it does not apear that these units had Snow plows on them and I just wanted to make sure I have asumed this right. Any help or pictures would be greatly appreciated. Kevin
Is it a SD40, SD40-2 Snoot or SD40-2 PhII? I'm not sure it's going to make a difference but who knows. I guess my next question is, who many SD40's (non-2's) made it into Yellowbonnet paint, i.e. how long did Santa Fe hang onto their SD40's? I know the SD45's and SD40-2's hung around for a long time, some are still in operation on BNSF.
I did some internet searching for SD40 and ATSF and I really could not come up with much - one site mentioned about a 15 number range (I don'r remember what it was) of SD40s (not -2s) Anyway - apperently IMRL 221 is a former ATSF SD40 and I found a picture at Northeast Rails Web Site and I am using it here without permision maybe there is a plow?
If you are talking about SD40, rather than SD40-2, the SD40's were numbered ATSF 5000-5019, and recently they were all still running, except for 5011 and 5015, so they would all be in warbonnet paint. I photographed 5014 in 1998, and it does not have a snowplough, also a couple of other photos of 5003 and 5004, also show no ploughs. All the SD40-2's I have seen have ploughs. These units were renumbered BNSF 6300-6317.
Thanks for the quick help guys. I am going to go ahead and model my SD40 (not sd40-2) with out a plow and when I get a picture of her all done ill post one for you all to marval at. Kevin
Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me again? I have the air conditioner and am ready to place it on the cab roof but I would like a good roof shot. I guess any EMD SD40, SD45, or SD40-2 would work but if you have a SD40 pic or know of one on a website I would appreciate the help. Kevin
Kevin, This is the best I could find (of an SD40; I didn't look for any others). It looks to me like the a/c unit is centered on the cab roof (maybe slightly towards the front). Dwight
Thank you, a very nice picture. I think it will help me out. by the way Edmonds where the pic was shot is about 10 miles from my house. Its very nice in the summer to go out to the beach and watch trains with a warm breeze. Kevin
