    It just takes practice. I personally use a CAD program and printout a templete for each turnout I build. I have standard #6 & #8 templates but I frequently custom design one for a special situation. Then I build the turnout at my workbench. When I have completed it, I solder some temporary pieces of brass stock to the top, remove the spikes, and then reinstall it on the railroad. Templates used to be available through Walthers and I understand that they are also available from the NMRA. I will contact you off-line with more detailed info.
