I have a 2' by 7'10" foot N scale layout. It's been broken up into a yard/engine terminal on one side and a small industrial section on the other side. I'd like to somehow break the two scenes up. I thought about using a foam core sheet with a pair of "tunnels" but the two sides aren't really two different scenes but are connected. Now I'm wondering just how to go about breaking them up to eliminate the obvious loop look to the mainline. I had an idea and wanted to run it by the pros here.
I've seen highway bridges used many times and my idea was to use a two rail bridge, it wouldn't be electrified (I think) but it would be a cool way to display some engines and a place to store some of my rolling stock. The bridge would go up and over the back part of my yard. I was wondering if there is any prototype references of if this would just be too wierd? Let me know what ya think. Oh and I gues I'd just assume that the railway on the bridge and my layout hooked up somewhere off layout.

I'm not following this too well (probably impending senility [IMG] ), but nothing is too weird if you like it. OTOH, "almost" nothing is too weird if you like it.

I would try to use something like a bridge, hill, or other structure instead of the plain panel backdrop across the layout.

I've seen nice work done with structures getting used for a scenic break.

I used tree's on one layout to split the two sides. I don't think you need much height.it's just a matter of making it obvious that the two areas are separate.

    A ridge?

you could do a flat down the middle and put city details one side and rural the other.

I bet someone here has a split scene with a divider in it. Perhaps they can provide pics?

    I do! I do!!
Well, it doesn't sperate scenes, I hides hidden staging, but works, nevertheless:
    Here's how it's built:

And here's what it looks like:

I think it works well enough to hide this:

How high is that divider and do you acces it from over the top or from the side you're taking the picture from?

It is a whopping 4 inches tall, I just reach over it.

If I had to do it over again, I'd make it undulate more, to simulate rolling, hilly terrain.
