I have Woodland Scenics blended turf, earth blend that I want to try on my layout. I bought some white glue today, (elmers type). What is tha amount of water to glue in the spray bottle! In other words how many parts water to how many parts glue? And will this work to lay down the earthe blend and grass blend ( the dark green turf)? And it is removable if I mess up?

    Thanks,

    DJ

I use 50/50 glue and water and it works fine.

Do you know about using some dish washing liquid or isopropal[rubbing] alcohol to make the solution flow better? Makes the water "wetter" by breaking the surface tension. I recently started using alcohol and it seems to work better for me than the soap. My formula is one part white glue, two parts water and a tablespoon of alcohol or teaspoon of liquid detergent. If you want to apply it with a spray bottle, you usually need three parts water to one glue or it won't spray out nozzel.

Is this using a spray bottle or paint brush? Also do you lay the ballast the same way?

Spray bottle works fine, it covers alot more area than a brush would. About the ballast, all you do is sprinkle it on the tracks, rub your finger between the rails to smooth it out, spray it down with the solution and after its dry get a small vacuum and pick up the leftovers. After that use a black wash with earth tones to highlight the tracks to make it look used.

Once the glue dries it is not real easy to remove other than useing a scrapper.
If you would like to know about laying ballast I have a "HoW to lay ballast" on my website

I use about 3 water to one glue. It holds fast when dry, but is easier to take things up later if you wish. On ballast, after it is spread out, I use one of those little hair dye bottles with a spout, 3 to 1 glue and a touch of soap. For me, go down between the tracks and the soap helps it run out and glue the ballast ouside the tracks too. I can relay that track if I so desire, but a thicker mixture of glue, throw the track away and start over.

After spreading the ballast and having it just the way you want it, I use a fine mist of water with alcohol sprayed up so it falls gently on the ballast(also ground cover). This way the ballast does not move. Get it thourougly wet, then use 50/50 glue/water applied with a pipette(large eyedropper) This method doesn't disturd the ballast or leave pockmarks like spraying the glue often does.
