Chuck Anderson/Press-Banner Most people assume the Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific Railroad’s tourist train to the Boardwalk never runs past Graham Hill Road in Felton. But the rail line actually extends nearly two more miles north, ending near Olympia Station Road, shown at left. It goes through Mt. Hermon Conference Center and past the Zayante fire station, horse barns and rural homes. Until winter storms severed the line in 1940, it was the heavily traveled Southern Pacific route through the mountains from San Jose to Santa Cruz, carrying freight and passenger trains including the famed “Suntan Special.” Today, only local residents, hikers and railroad buffs know about what’s left, and the Boardwalk train crosses Graham Hill Road only far enough to pick up passengers on occasional special runs from the conference center. Above, the rusting hulk of a flatcar sits on a weed-infested siding along the remaining right-of-way, still owned by the Felton-based railroad. Chuck Anderson/Press-Banner
If they ever did run a train up that way, I'm certain there'd be loud whimperings from locals. Boxcab E50
