    What were those articulated covered hoppers designed to carry? The size suggest something fairly dense, while covered indicates either fine material that would blow away during transit, or something that must be kept clean and/or dry.

    I suppose the advantage of articulated cars is less drag/rolling resistance, due to fewer, larger diameter wheels. If container cars can be successfully articulated, I don't see why other types of cars can't. They also have the advantage of more cargo in less train-length, so shorter industry trackage, passing sidings, etc. can handle heavier loads.
