Someone in my club is interested in modeling the SD&AE in N scale and was asking me if they ever had their own paint scheme. Although I am a San Diego native, I do not know the answer to this.

    Anybody else know?

    Thanks,
    Don

I'm no expert, but I do have this shot that I found somewhere. I actually liked the way these looked and used it as a reference for coming up with my own scheme. I've also got a shot of an SW unit that was kind of a dull red and gray scheme.

    Hey, Don,

I model the SD&AE and can tell you anything you need to know:

    First:
The SD&AE started as the SD&A in 1906, completed in 1919 from San Diego to El Centro. Most of their STEAMERS were ex-southern pacific 2-8-0's and 4-6-0's, with similar paint and the company name spelled out on their tenders. The rr was bought by SP in 1932 and renamed the SD&AE.

    Second:
From 1953 (dieselization year) to 1981, engines were SP geeps and U-boats in the tiger stripe, black widow, or (mostly) bloody nose paint scheme.

    Finally:
From 1982 to 1983, Kyle railways took over and used 4 gp9r's ( ex-UP, I believe) with SD&AE initials in gothic blue on blue & white backgrounds. After the line closed in 1983, no enginehas had its own paint scheme for the railroad. This is a picture of the Kyle paint scheme:

I hope this helps. If you need any SD&AE knowledge, I'm your guy!

The SD&A was always in the pocket of the SP. When the original SD&A interests sold the line to the SP, the new company became the SD&AE (wholy owned by the SP). So by the time dieselization came around, SP was providing all the power.
