I’ve got an undecorated hopper and a reefer I’m going to do some salt weathering on in the near future. Never done it before myself.

As I understand it, you first put down the base rust color(s) and then mask with a coarse salt and apply to top color. When it’s dry, brush away the salt. Plenty of videos online to coach me through the process. But….

…that got me thinking about doing it in reverse. Has anyone taken a factory painted model, added a salt mask, and then painted with rust? If so, how did it turn out? Any pointers?

It seems like I’d probably need to use much more salt (maybe table salt and not coarse because I want much more mask?), but it could be possible to reach some of those recessed places on locomotives where a sponge won’t reach without gobbing paint all around it and where brush strokes would look to heavy.
