I know they happen from time to time but this one grabbed my attention.

There is a fairly plausible rumor the UP is looking to relay the Missouri MKT trackage from Sedalia to West Alton; and yes that includes reinstalling the bridge section they took out at Booneville plus overhauling the old span.

With the emphasis on commuter service improvements as well as the need to add coal trains they have but two options: overhaul either a bed, IE; the old Rock Island line that is still intact from KC through St.Louis or the KATY bed from Sedalia East or second option construct a completely new line for the service buying new right of way.

The rumor started as they determined the reconstruction on the existing dual track was going to be insufficient by a longshot to cover what they have obligated to on Amtrak and coal deliveries.

Well, it would be interesting to have absolute proof this might happen. Hope someone close to the source will be able to confirm.
